Level 2 Electricians For Main Service Lines
The mains service line is the cable that runs from the electricity network to your home’s switchboard. It’s the foundation of your entire electrical system, and it’s the part most homeowners never think about until something goes wrong, or until it quietly holds back an upgrade they’ve been planning for years.
This is Level 2 ASP work. It sits outside the scope of a standard electrical licence.
Hack-It Electrical Solutions holds a Level 2 ASP accreditation, which avoids requiring a separate contractor to do this work

Do You Need a New Mains Connection or a Mains Upgrade?
IThese are two separate services, though they’re closely related. Knowing which one applies to your property makes the process a lot more straightforward.
New Mains Connection
A new mains connection is required when a property has no existing connection to the electricity network — or when the existing connection needs to be newly established as part of a build, subdivision, or site reconfiguration.
This includes:
- New home builds on vacant land
- Granny flat or secondary dwelling connections
- Subdivided lots requiring a separate supply
- Reconnections after a property has been disconnected from the network
- Temporary construction supplies that need to be formalised
The work involves coordinating with Ausgrid or Essential Energy, preparing the connection application, installing the service fuse, and making the property ready to receive supply.
Mains Upgrade
A mains upgrade involves replacing or increasing the capacity of the existing service line between the network and your switchboard. It’s most commonly needed when:
- The existing mains cable is undersized for your current or planned load
- You’re installing solar, a battery system, or an EV charger and the cable can’t support the additional draw
- You’re upgrading to three-phase power
- Your cable has aged, deteriorated, or been flagged on an inspection
- You’ve received a defect notice from the network distributor relating to the service line
Many homes across the Mid North Coast, particularly those built in the 1970s, 80s, and 90s,are running on 6mm mains cables that were sized for the electrical loads of that era.
They weren’t designed to carry solar inverters, reverse-cycle air conditioning, induction cooktops, and EV chargers simultaneously.
If your home ticks more than one of those boxes, a mains assessment is worth having.he installation, arrange an Essential Energy inspection where required, and manage energisation.
For defect notices, we work to the compliance timeframe set out in the notice and communicate clearly with you at each stage.

What the Work Involves
Mains connection and upgrade work follows a structured process that involves both Hack-It Electrical Solutions and your network distributor (Ausgrid or Essential Energy, depending on your area).
Assessment and Application
Before any work begins, the existing service line and meter arrangement are assessed. Where a new connection or upgrade is required, an application is lodged with the distributor.
Disconnection and Make-Safe
Mains work requires a planned disconnection from the network. Timing is coordinated to minimise disruption, and the property is made safe before and after the work is carried out.
Installation
The new service line is installed to current Australian standards, correctly sized for your property’s existing and anticipated load. All work is completed by a licenced Level 2 ASP
Reconnection and Sign-Off
Once the installation is complete, reconnection is coordinated with the distributor and all relevant documentation is provided. You don’t need to chase anyone, Hack-It handles the end-to-end process.
Why the Mains Cable Gets Overlooked
Most people focus on the switchboard when they’re thinking about electrical capacity. The switchboard is the visible thing, the thing with the switches. But a switchboard is only as capable as the cable feeding it.
If your mains cable is undersized, upgrading your switchboard won’t solve the capacity problem. The restriction is upstream. This is one of the most common points of confusion in residential electrical upgrades, and it’s worth understanding before you commit to a larger job.
A mains cable assessment takes very little time, and it either rules out the issue or gives you a clear picture of what needs to happen before the rest of the upgrade can proceed.
