Why induction Cooktops Require its own circuit

A four zone induction cooktop draws considerably more power than the gas or ceramic unit it’s replacing, often 7 kilowatts or more once everything is running. That’s more than a general power circuit is built to carry, which is why induction always gets its own dedicated circuit.

Sharing a circuit is usually what causes nuisance tripping. Three zones running at once while the kettle is on is enough to trip a breaker that wasn’t sized for the job. A properly sized dedicated circuit solves that before it becomes a problem.

What the wiring actually involves

Dedicated circuit: its own cable run from the switchboard to the cooktop, never shared with power points or the oven.
Cable sized to the load: this depends on the cooktop’s rating and the length of the run, so we calculate it for your specific job rather than working from a guess.
Its own circuit breaker: sized to match the cable and the appliance, fitted on a spare way in the board.
RCD protection: required on all new circuits under AS/NZS 3000.
An isolation switch: lets the cooktop be turned off without going to the switchboard.
Hardwired connection: induction cooktops are wired in directly, not plugged in.

Where a simple install can turn into a bigger job

Two things commonly change the scope of the work, and both are worth knowing about before you commit to a delivery date.

No spare way in the switchboard: a lot of older homes in Bellingen and Coffs Harbour still run on a ceramic fuse board with no room to add a circuit. That usually means a switchboard upgrade is needed first.
Not enough supply into the house: if the existing mains can’t carry the extra load, the supply itself needs upgrading. That’s Level 2 work, and because we’re Level 2 accredited it stays with us instead of getting handed off to another contractor.

This is where a lot of kitchen renovations get held up. The cooktop arrives, the cabinetmaker has finished their part, and only then does it become clear the house can’t actually supply it yet.
It’s worth sorting the electrical side early rather than discovering the problem on delivery day.

Coming off gas Cooking

Most people moving to induction are coming off gas, which means there’s no existing circuit anywhere near the cooktop. That’s completely normal and still straightforward, it just needs a bit of planning. We run the new circuit, connect the cooktop, and certify the work.

Making the old gas point safe is a job for a licensed gasfitter, and we’ll let you know if that needs organising alongside our work.

Planning To Renovate a kitchen?

Bring us in at the planning stage rather than at the end. If we know the cooktop model before the cabinetry goes in, we can run the cable inside the wall while the kitchen is still open. That’s cheaper and considerably neater than chasing a cable in after the fact, and it also means the isolation switch ends up somewhere sensible instead of wherever there happens to be room.

Yes. Induction cooktops draw more power than standard appliances and usually require a dedicated circuit with the correct amperage rating (typically 32A or higher). We assess your existing wiring and switchboard to determine if upgrades are needed, then install new cabling and safety switches as required. This ensures safe, reliable operation and compliance with Australian wiring standards.

In many cases, yes — but you may need a circuit upgrade. Induction cooktops often have different power requirements than older electric models. We’ll inspect your current setup, confirm your wiring and switchboard capacity, and make any necessary changes to support your new appliance.

Usually because the cooktop is sharing a circuit with something else, or the circuit itself is undersized for the load. A dedicated, correctly sized circuit fixes that.
