Do You Need a Three-Phase Upgrade?
Before anything else, are you wondering if you actually need three-phase power? Here are the situations where three-phase power becomes the right conversation to have.
Are you planning to install solar with battery storage?
Larger solar systems and battery banks often require three-phase supply to export and distribute power efficiently across your home or property. If you’re sizing up a serious renewable energy setup, your single-phase switchboard may become the bottleneck.
Are you looking at an EV charger?
Level 2 EV chargers — particularly faster 11kW or 22kW units — run on three-phase power. If you’re buying an electric vehicle and want a proper home charging setup rather than a slow overnight trickle from a standard outlet, three-phase is worth factoring in.
Are your breakers tripping when multiple appliances run at once?
If your switchboard regularly trips when the air conditioner, oven, and hot water system are all running, you may simply be exceeding what single-phase supply can deliver. Three-phase spreads that load across three circuits, reducing strain on any one phase.
Are you running or planning to run workshop machinery?
Lathes, compressors, welders, CNC equipment, and large dust extraction systems are typically designed for three-phase motors. Running them on single-phase either isn’t possible or requires expensive conversion equipment that adds inefficiency and cost.
Do you have a bore pump, irrigation system, or cold storage?
Large pumps and refrigeration compressors on rural properties draw significant current on startup and under sustained load. Three-phase motors handle this more efficiently and with less wear than equivalent single-phase setups.
Are you building new or planning a major renovation?
If you’re putting in a new build, a large shed or workshop, or undertaking a renovation that significantly increases your electrical load, now is the time to specify three-phase — retrofitting later is always more disruptive and expensive.
Is your home on a small mains cable?
This one catches a lot of Mid North Coast homeowners off guard. A significant number of homes in this region, particularly older properties, are still connected to the grid via a 6mm mains cable.
Newer homes typically have 16mm. That original cable was sized for the electrical demands of a different era, long before induction cooktops, ducted air conditioning, EV chargers, and solar battery systems became common.
A small mains cable creates a hard ceiling on how much power your home can safely draw, no matter how good your switchboard is. If you’re planning any significant load increase, the mains cable needs to be assessed first.

What Is a Three-Phase Switchboard?
A three-phase switchboard distributes power across three separate electrical phases rather than one. This allows for greater total load capacity, more balanced power distribution, and the ability to run large motors and equipment that simply aren’t suited to single-phase supply.
It was the standard for commercial and industrial premises, and now larger rural and residential properties are needing to upgrade as well.
More homes are future proofing themselves with large solar installations, fast EV chargers, home based business set ups and larger heating and cooling systems.
Upgrades from Single-Phase to Three-Phase
Upgrading an existing property from single-phase to three-phase requires careful coordination between the licensed electrician, your energy distributor (Essential Energy on the Mid North Coast), and in some cases a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider for the mains connection work.
We manage this process end to end. If your existing switchboard and internal wiring need upgrading as part of the transition, we handle that too, so you’re not left coordinating multiple trades.
Switchboard Replacements and Compliance Upgrades
Older three-phase switchboards, particularly those still using rewireable fuses or non-compliant breakers, need to be brought up to current AS/NZS 3000:2018 standards. We assess, replace, and certify, providing a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work (CCEW) with every job.
Fault Finding and Repairs
Three-phase faults can be harder to diagnose than single-phase problems, and the consequences of getting it wrong are greater. We carry out methodical fault finding and rectification on three-phase systems, minimising downtime and identifying root causes rather than just symptoms.

Who We Work With
If you have an upcoming project that will require mains-level work, a new build, a major load upgrade, or a property that’s never had three-phase supply, get in touch now to discuss timing.
- Rural property owners running bore pumps, irrigation systems, or farm machinery who’ve outgrown single-phase supply or are setting up a new rural block from scratch.
- Builders and owner-builders on new residential and commercial builds who need a licensed electrician to manage the switchboard installation from the ground up.
- Small and medium business operators — workshops, trades businesses, food businesses with commercial refrigeration, and light industrial operators who need reliable, compliant three-phase infrastructure.
- Homeowners upgrading to solar, batteries, EV chargers, or high-demand appliances where single-phase capacity has become a limiting factor.
Level 2 Accredited Service Provider — Mains Connection Work
For work that extends to the mains connection, the service line between the street and your switchboard this requires a Level 2 Accredited Service Provider and having one licensed operator handle the complete installation means faster turnaround, clearer accountability, and fewer moving parts.
Work that Level 2 ASPs are authorised to carry out includes:
- Installing and relocating service lines (aerial and underground)
- Connecting and disconnecting properties from the distribution network
- Installing metering and service fuses
- Upgrading mains cables to support increased load
- Temporary supply connections for construction sites
