The NSW smoke alarm rules in plain English
In NSW, it is a legal requirement to have at least one working smoke alarm installed on every level of a home. Fire and Rescue NSW recommends photoelectric smoke alarms, which respond well to the smouldering fires common in homes. Smoke alarms also have a working life, and manufacturers generally recommend replacing them around every 10 years.
What we install
All work is carried out to the AS/NZS 3000 Wiring Rules by a licensed electrician and certified on completion.
For new homes and major renovations, smoke alarms must be hardwired (240V) with a battery backup under the National Construction Code.
(Regulations can change. For the current detail, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Fair Trading are the authorities to check. We always install to the current standard.)

Renting out a property? Landlord obligations
If you are a landlord in NSW, the Residential Tenancies rules place clear responsibilities on you to keep smoke alarms installed and working, including regular checks, replacing batteries, and replacing alarms that reach the end of their life. We can install compliant alarms and help you keep rental properties up to standard. For the exact current requirements, NSW Fair Trading is the authority.
Why hardwired and interconnected is worth it
Battery only alarms rely on someone remembering to change the battery. Hardwired alarms run off your mains power with a battery backup, so they keep working when it matters. Interconnecting them means an alarm at one end of the house wakes everyone, which makes a real difference in a two storey or spread out home, and we see plenty of those on larger Bellingen and acreage properties.
Our Process For New Smoke Alarms
- Check your current alarms: type, age and whether they meet the standard
- Recommend the right setup: number, placement and whether to interconnect
