Is Your Business Compliant?

A few situations where emergency and exit lighting becomes an immediate priority:

Are you fitting out a new commercial tenancy?
Any new commercial fitout requires emergency and exit lighting to be designed, installed, and certified before occupation. Getting this right from the start avoids costly rectification work later.

Has it been more than six months since your last test?
Under AS 2293, emergency lighting systems must be tested every six months and inspected annually. Many business owners don’t realise this is an ongoing obligation, not a one-off installation requirement.

Have you recently renovated or reconfigured your floor plan?
Any change to the layout of a commercial space can affect emergency egress paths, which may mean your existing emergency lighting no longer provides adequate coverage.

Has a fire safety inspector or certifier flagged your lighting?
Non-compliant emergency lighting is one of the most common items raised in fire safety audits. If you’ve received a notice or are preparing for an inspection, we can assess and rectify quickly.

Are your emergency lights failing to hold charge?
Emergency lighting units have batteries with a finite lifespan — typically four to five years. If your lights aren’t illuminating during a test cycle, the batteries or the units themselves likely need replacing by an electrician

Emergency and Exit Lighting Services

New Installations

We design and install emergency and exit lighting systems for new commercial builds, tenancy fitouts, and change of use applications. Every installation is designed to meet AS 2293 requirements for illumination levels, coverage, and placement, not just to pass inspection, but to actually work in an emergency.

Testing and Compliance Certification

We carry out the six-monthly functional testing and annual inspection required under AS 2293. Following each test we provide written records suitable for your compliance register — the documentation required to demonstrate your obligations have been met if you’re ever audited or inspected.

Upgrades and Replacements

Older emergency lighting systems — particularly those using fluorescent or incandescent fittings — can be upgraded to modern LED units that offer longer battery life, lower maintenance requirements, and better illumination. We replace individual failed units or upgrade entire systems depending on what the property requires.

Fault Finding and Repairs

If units are failing tests, not illuminating, or showing fault indicators, we carry out methodical diagnosis and repair. In many cases the issue is a failed battery rather than a faulty fitting — a straightforward fix that restores compliance without full replacement.

The Standard — AS 2293

All emergency lighting in Australia is governed by AS 2293 — Emergency escape lighting and exit signs for buildings. The standard covers:

  • Minimum illumination levels along escape routes
  • Placement and spacing of emergency and exit fittings
  • Battery duration requirements (minimum 90 minutes)
  • Testing frequency — functional test every six months, full discharge test annually
  • Record keeping requirements

Non-compliance can affect your insurance coverage, your occupancy certificate, and your liability in the event of an incident. It’s one of those obligations that’s easy to let slip — and genuinely important not to.

Emergency Lighting FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our services, safety standards, and what to expect when working with our team.

Under AS 2293, a functional test is required every six months and a full annual inspection is required once a year. Records of both must be kept on site and available for inspection.

Failed units need to be repaired or replaced and retested before the system can be certified as compliant. We carry out the repair and retest as part of the same job where possible to minimise disruption.

If your premises is a commercial building or tenancy that members of the public or employees occupy, emergency lighting is almost certainly required. The specific requirements depend on your building class under the National Construction Code. If you’re unsure, we can assess your premises and advise.

Battery replacement in emergency lighting units is electrical work and must be carried out by a licensed electrician in NSW. Replacing batteries yourself may also void any compliance certification on the system.

For most small commercial premises, a six-monthly test can be completed in under an hour. Larger or more complex buildings take longer. We’ll give you a realistic timeframe when you book.
