When To Upgrade Or Repair A Switchboard

Your switchboard is the central control point of your electrical system, yet it’s often overlooked until a problem occurs. Older or overloaded switchboards struggle to support the increase in power consumption required by newer electrical appliances, increasing the risk of power outages, electrical faults, or safety hazards.

Your home relies on air conditioning, induction cooktops, electric hot water and pool pumps, and without proper circuit protection, outdated switchboards can become unsafe.

Key Components We Upgrade in Modern Switchboards

Your switchboard is the heart of your electrical system, and when it’s outdated or overloaded, it can compromise the safety, efficiency, and performance of your entire home.
Switchboards are easily forgotten about and often taken for granted that they will continue to operate without issue.

Key Components We Upgrade in Modern Switchboards

At Hack-It Electrical Solutions, we upgrade key components in older switchboards to meet today’s safety requirements and electrical demands.

  • Safety Switches (Residual Current Devices – RCDs) : RCDs detect leakage currents and shut off power in fractions of a second. They reduce the risk of electric shock and significantly lower the chance of electrical fires. If your existing switchboard lacks RCD protection on all circuits, it may not comply with the current AS/NZS 3000:2018 standards. We install compliant, high-quality RCDs to ensure maximum safety and peace of mind.
  • Surge Protection Devices (SPDs): Voltage spikes—whether from lightning strikes, grid faults, or large appliances switching on—can destroy sensitive equipment or cause fires. We install surge protectors that absorb or divert these spikes before they can cause harm.
  • Circuit Breakers: Modern circuit breakers offer far more protection than outdated ceramic fuses. They automatically isolate electrical faults like short circuits and overloads, and they enable quick shutdowns for maintenance or upgrades. We replace obsolete breakers with current-compliant devices, including residual current circuit breakers (RCCBs) and arc fault detection devices (AFDDs) where required.
  • Fuse Box Replacements : Old fuse boxes, especially those still using rewireable fuses, are now considered high-risk. They degrade with age and often lack the protective layering found in modern switchboards. We replace these with new modular switchboards, integrating circuit breakers, safety switches, and surge protection into one clean, serviceable unit.

Whether you’re adding new appliances, renovating, wiring a shed or bringing an older property up to current standards, we’ll recommend a solution that’s reliable, scalable, and designed to last.
