The Local Electrician You Can Rely On

Honest advice, quality workmanship, and dependable electrical solutions backed by experience and safety.

Have you received a defect notice from Essential Energy?

If Essential Energy has issued a defect notice on your private power pole, you need to act quickly. Defect notices come with a compliance deadline — missing it can result in Essential Energy disconnecting your supply until the work is completed and signed off.

We handle defect notices regularly across the Coffs Coast and Nambucca Valley. Contact us as soon as the notice arrives. We will inspect the pole, provide a clear scope and quote, carry out the Level 2 replacement or remediation work, and lodge the completion documentation with Essential Energy to have the notice cleared. You do not need to deal with Essential Energy directly — we manage the process on your behalf.

What Is a Private Power Pole?

Not all power poles are the same. Essential Energy owns and maintains the poles that run along the road verge and carry the network through your street. These are their responsibility.

A private power pole is any pole that sits on your land. Its job is to carry the overhead service line from the street network across your property to your home, shed, or outbuilding — particularly on rural and semi-rural properties where the connection point is set back from the road. The moment that pole is on your land, it is your asset and your liability.

Essential Energy will not repair or replace a private pole. If it fails, leans, or is flagged as unsafe, the cost and the responsibility fall entirely to the property owner.

Why Private Poles Fail on the Mid North Coast

The Mid North Coast climate is hard on timber poles. High humidity, persistent moisture at ground level, seasonal flooding on some properties, and significant termite pressure all accelerate the deterioration of treated timber poles from the inside out. A pole can look structurally sound from the outside while being hollow and compromised at the base.

Many rural properties in this region were connected to the network decades ago, and the original timber poles have never been replaced. Thirty, forty, and fifty-year-old poles are common. Age alone is not the only factor — installation depth, soil conditions, drainage, and the original treatment quality all affect how long a pole lasts — but an unassessed older pole is always a risk worth addressing.

Common signs that a private pole needs attention include visible lean, cracks or splits in the timber, soft or spongy timber at ground level, rust or corrosion on hardware, sagging or deteriorating service lines, and frequent tripping of the main switch during windy conditions. If your pole has not been inspected in recent years and your property has overhead service lines, an assessment is worth arranging before a problem develops into an emergency.the process is straightforward: we assess the work, lodge the necessary applications, carry out the installation, arrange an Essential Energy inspection where required, and manage energisation. For defect notices, we work to the compliance timeframe set out in the notice and communicate clearly with you at each stage.

Private Power Pole Services

Pole Inspections and Assessments

We carry out private power pole inspections for property owners who want to understand the condition of their poles before a problem develops, or prior to a property purchase or sale. We assess the structural integrity of the pole, the condition of all hardware and fittings, the service line attachment, and compliance with current standards. You will receive a clear report on the condition of the pole and any work required.

Timber Pole Replacement

We supply and install treated hardwood timber poles as a direct replacement for ageing or failed private poles. Timber remains a practical and cost-effective option for most rural properties and is appropriate in the majority of situations..

Steel Pole Installation

Galvanised steel poles are increasingly preferred for new installations and replacements in areas with high termite activity, poor drainage, or damp soil conditions. Steel poles offer significantly greater longevity than timber in challenging ground conditions and require minimal ongoing maintenance. We will advise on whether a steel pole is the right option for your property at the assessment stage.

New Pole Installations

New poles are required when a property extends its overhead service line — for new sheds, secondary dwellings, rural outbuildings, or situations where an existing underground service line is being converted to overhead. We design and install new private pole arrangements in coordination with the existing service line and point of attachment infrastructure..

Defect Notice Resolution

If you have received a defect notice from Essential Energy relating to a private power pole, we manage the entire process — assessment, scoping, installation, and Essential Energy sign-off. We are familiar with Essential Energy’s compliance documentation requirements and work to the timeframe specified in your notice.

Associated Level 2 Work

Private pole work often involves associated Level 2 service line work — the overhead cable that runs from the pole to your property’s point of attachment. As a licensed Level 2 ASP we carry out all associated service line, point of attachment, and consumer mains work in the same scope, so you are not left coordinating multiple contractors.

Servicing Coffs Harbour to Nambucca Heads

We carry out private power pole work across the full corridor from Coffs Harbour and Sawtell in the north through Urunga, Bellingen, and Raleigh to Nambucca Heads and the Nambucca Valley in the south. This includes rural and acreage properties throughout the hinterland, Bowraville, Scotts Head, Valla, Macksville, and surrounding communities.

If your property falls outside this corridor, contact us — we assess regional jobs on a case-by-case basis.

Private Power Pole FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our services, safety standards, and what to expect when working with our team.

The property owner is responsible for any power pole that sits on private land. Essential Energy owns and maintains poles on the road verge and along the street network, but their responsibility ends at the point where the service line leaves the network infrastructure. Any pole on your land — and the service line it carries — is your asset and your liability.

If the pole is on your land rather than the road verge, it is almost certainly a private pole. On rural properties this is usually straightforward — the pole or poles carrying the service line across your paddock are private. If you are unsure, contact us and we can assess the situation.

Timber poles can be significantly deteriorated internally while still appearing sound from the outside. Ground-level rot and termite damage are often not visible without a physical inspection. If your pole is more than fifteen to twenty years old and has not been assessed, it is worth arranging an inspection — particularly before selling a property or adding new electrical loads.

Essential Energy can disconnect your supply if a defect notice is not resolved within the specified timeframe. Reconnection will not occur until the work is completed by a licensed Level 2 ASP and the compliance documentation is lodged with Essential Energy. Contact us as soon as you receive a notice so we can move quickly.

Yes. We supply both timber and galvanised steel poles and handle the full installation including hardware, fittings, and associated service line work. You do not need to source materials separately.
